Dead Triathletes Speak - Voices from the middle of the pack
By Tom Arcaro, Ph.D., and Kyle Torke, Ph.D.

How do I get ready to do a triathlon? What should I do the night before? What is the single most cost efficient purchase I can make to insure a faster race time? Inspired by the race reports and other threads of wisdom which appear in the messages sent to eack other by the Triathletes of the Dead Runners Society (TRI-DRS), this book contains much of value for both beginning and veteran triathletes.

The Maffetone Method: The holistic, low-stress, no-pain way to exceptional fitness
By Philip Maffetone
ISBN: 0071343318

An introduction to heart rate training. If you're looking for a how-to book, this is not necessarily the one for you. If you're looking for someone to convince you that heart rate training is the way to go, this is the book to read. (Well one of the books.) This book may also give you the confidence to do your own workouts at your own pace instead of killing yourself (or maybe boring yourself) in group workouts.

Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook, 2nd ed.
By Nancy Clark
ISBN: 0873227301

Recommended by Emma's nutritionist (and given to Emma by Emma's mom Maryann). Not as in-depth as I would have liked, but I have some pretty weird nutritional requirements (read: I have a million food allergies). This book doesn't talk about meeting nutritional requirements for Ironman races, but it does have some good information (and it even talks about "bonking"). Includes great recipes! As a side note: not everyone on the list thinks that this book has it exactly right.

Nutrition Almanac
By Gayla J. Kirschmann, John D. Kirschmann
ISBN: 0071345485

Includes a nifty Table of Food Composition and a whole section on Ailments and Other Stressful Conditions -- not to mention various charts that list symptoms and possibly nutrient deficiencies that may be causing the symptoms. I "liberated" my mom's 1979 edition when I left for school (and she's not getting it back). The authors and ISBN I've listed are for the newest (1998) edition.

SERIOUS Training for Endurance Athletes
By Rob Sleamaker and Ray Browning
ISBN: 0873226445

For the geeks among us that like charts and graphs and well-planned training. This book will help you develop a year-long training plan (and beyond). Be sure to check out (fellow tri-dead) Rob's TriLog. It's an MS Excel file with all the charts and graphs ready to go -- all you need to do is stick in your variables. (This makes life VERY easy. Trilog is also available as either a distance-based or time-based training  journal.)

Triathlon: A Visual History
By Scott Tinley
ISBN: 1884737498

I have been reading Tinley's Triathlon: A Visual History. Just go get it. It's jammed with pictures, quotes, stories from the beginning of triathlon to the present. It makes me laugh, cry, giggle and snort to read his stuff. And I am coming to an understanding of this sport like I have not had before.

Total Immersion : The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier
By Terry Laughlin and John Delves
ISBN: 068481885X

Thought you knew how to swim? (Know you don't?) Be prepared to read this book. It won't give you a bunch of drills that look like this: 3x50, 4x100 etc. It will explain how swimming should feel. (And it will tell you to throw away your kickboard which is ok because using that thing is hard anyway, right?)

The Triathlete's Training Bible
By Joe Friel
ISBN: 188473748X

From start to finish, an excellent resource (including a bibliography at the end of each chapter). This book pulls a number of concepts that can be found in other books (e.g. Total Immersion swimming) into a very readable package.
