Over the years the TRI-DRS list members have developed a number of unique traditions. The TRI-DRS dogtag
This dogtag was originally purchased by Shelley McKee and has been worn by athletes all over the world in Ironman triathlons, marathons, and races of all distances. It is said to bring luck and PRs and so it is often requested for major races as long as a year in advance. Accompanying the tag is a large packet of autographed bib numbers and inspiring messages from numerous wearers. The dogtag coordinator has been Tania Larkin for several years. (Contact Tania via the list for reservations, and make them very early, allowing plenty of time for receiving and shipping along the tags to the next wearer). Secret Santa In November of each year a member (John Green in recent years) organizes an exchange or addresses among members and tells participating members in secret the person's name they are assigned. Packages are sent out in late November containing at a minimum old race t-shirts, and sometimes a lucky list member receives a lavish collection of race memorabilia, triathlon gear, and regional gifts. Often elaborate security precautions are taken to hide the sender's identity. It's also customary to research the materials received and make a public guess on the list as to who was your Secret Santa. Watch for announcements on the list in early November each year. In January of every year since 2003 members have participated in a virtual indoor triathlon at their home gyms, dubbed Indoorman. All distances of triathlon are available, from sprint on up to the legendary full indoor Iron-distance race of at least one member (Dave Decker). Watch for announcements on the list in late December each year.
"Hurricane Bob" Mina earned a coffee mug at the finish line of the 2001 Eagleman Half Ironman. The story has gone down in TRI-DRS lore, and the mug has been passed around to several many of the members. You can read the story of the mug in Bob's xtri.com entry for June 2001 here or on his own site here.
